Another week brings another batch of brand new horror movies, and this week’s offerings including the return of Alex Garland, a Full Moon sequel, and a Marvel vampire movie.
How’s that for variety?
Here’s all the new horror arriving May 17-May 22, 2022!
After scaring up $163 million worldwide, Sony’s Marvel vampire movie Morbius has come home, with Sony releasing the film on Digital today, followed by physical media on June 14.
“One of the most compelling and conflicted characters in Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters comes to the big screen as Oscar® winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble.
“While at first it seems to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed. Will good override evil – or will Morbius succumb to his mysterious new urges?”
Daniel Espinosa (Life) directed Morbius for Sony.
Meagan wrote in her review of Morbius, “At best, it’s a serviceable placeholder until the next installment of this expanding universe.” She adds, “Morbius is primarily a fangless affair.”
Hanna Bergholm’s modern horror fairy tale Hatching from IFC Midnight opened in theaters just last month, and you’re now able to rent it on VOD as of today, May 17th.
In Hatching, “12-year-old gymnast, Tinja (Siiri Solalinna), is desperate to please her image-obsessed mother, whose popular blog ‘Lovely Everyday Life’ presents their family’s idyllic existence as manicured suburban perfection. One day, after finding a wounded bird in the woods, Tinja brings its strange egg home, nestles it in her bed, and nurtures it until it hatches. The creature that emerges becomes her closest friend and a living nightmare, plunging Tinja beneath the impeccable veneer into a twisted reality that her mother refuses to see.”
Ilja Rautsi wrote the screenplay, and Siiri Solalinna, Sophia Heikkila, Jani Volanen, Oiva Ollila, and Reino Nordin star in Hatching. Watch the official trailer below.
The other new horror release to kick things off today is writer/director Jonathan Zaurin‘s horror movie Hollow, which is now available on VOD outlets from Devilworks.
In Hollow, “A woman with early signs of Alzheimers begins to have lucid dreams and nightmares that a living Punch puppet has moved in with her and her family. As her loss of reality and symptoms worsen, she uncovers something sinister is observing her every move and preparing a darkness that leads her into a frenzied and terrifying confrontation.”
The film’s cast includes Pat Garrett (Little Shop of Horrors), Ellie Jeffreys (Jack Falls), Pete Bird (The Snarling), Ben Manning (The Snarling), Mike Coombes, Pablo Raybould, and Ayvianna Snow (The Convent, The Lockdown Hauntings, Vampire Virus, The Seven).
Are you a fan of found footage horrors? Brand new Shudder original documentary The Found Footage Phenomenon will begin streaming this Thursday, May 19th.
Shudder previews, “The documentary tracks the origins of the found footage technique and how it transformed with technological changes throughout the last few decades. The Found Footage Phenomenon features interviews with integral found footage directors whose films impacted the horror genre like no other sub-genre has, around the turn of the millennium.”
Of course, landmark found footage horror movies including The McPherson Tape, The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity will get the spotlight, among many others.
Sarah Appleton and Phillip Escott directed and produced the documentary.
The biggest new release for the week is A24’s folk horror movie Men, directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation) and earning rave reviews from critics so far.
Men opens exclusively in movie theaters this Friday.

Meagan wrote in her review for BD, “Those that don’t mind enigmatic descents into surrealistic, gruesome horror will find this a trip worth taking.”
12 Hour Shift director Brea Grant examines the pursuit of fame through the lens of horror and country music in her latest, with Torn Hearts available for digital purchase on May 20.
The film follows “two friends, rising artists on the brink of a big break, who will do just about anything to realize their dream – including a pilgrimage to the legendary and reclusive Harper Dutch’s (Golden Globe winner Katey Sagal) mansion in the hopes she’ll record a song with them. While their life-long idol seems intent to help, the visit devolves into a twisted series of mental and physical torment as the pair discover Harper – and each other – may have other motives.
“With no other choice and desperate to record a song, the duo must go to dangerous lengths to prove their dedication to their dream of becoming Nashville’s next country music stars.”
Abby Quinn and Alexxis Lemire star as the eponymous country music duo seeking out Harper for help with their career aspirations.
Presented by Blumhouse Television and EPIX, Torn Hearts also stars Joshua Leonard (The Blair Witch Project) and Shiloh Fernandez (Evil Dead). Rachel Koller Croft wrote the script, and the film’s executive producers are John Ierardi, Jeremy Gold, Chris McCumber, and Jason Blum.
From directors Sarah Jayne Portelli and Ivan Malekin, psychological horror movie Machination is inspired by COVID-19 and its effect on mental health, available on VOD this Friday.
Starring Steffi Thake, Rambert Attard, Sean James Sutton, and Andrew Bonnello, the improvised film is about a young woman forced to confront the monsters that haunt her.
“News of an out of control pandemic has gripped the world and mass panic is pushing humanity into an uncertain future. Maria, a sensitive and anxious woman, struggles to cope in self-isolation. With fear mounting and the demands of the world closing in, Maria is forced to confront her past and the monsters that surround her … both without and within.”
After more than 15 years and nine movies, Full Moon has announced that Evil Bong 888 will be the final film in the franchise, premiering on all Full Moon platforms on May 20th.
In the film, “When he’s finally given a chance to go legit by opening a restaurant, Rabbit (series regular Sonny Carl Davis) can’t stop himself from sliding back to his old ways. With Eebee as his Master Chef, weed is definitely on the menu and this high-end joint is the toke of the town. Staffed with tons of familiar faces and fan favorite buds, will Rabbit end on a high note? Or will he be chopped by the cops in a kitchen nightmare that goes up in smoke?”
