Sometimes, it means one bleak holiday. For other movies, it yields zany results.

I’m Dreaming of a White Doomsday
Writer/Director Mike Lombardo’s debut delivers one downer of a holiday horror movie. The plot follows a mother and her 8-year-old son as they experience the holidays in a bunker amidst an apocalypse. In other words, expect an emphasis on the “doom” part of the title. That it’s a small indie feature means that it’s the type of apocalyptic tale that favors slow burn psychological and existential horror over big action swings.
Black Friday
A raucous creature feature that captures the horrors of shopping on Black Friday. Set within a toy store, it follows a group of disgruntled employees as they begrudgingly arrive for work on the busiest day of the year for retail. Meanwhile, an alien parasite crashes into Earth via meteor. The employees’ rough night gets exponentially worse when their shoppers become bloodthirsty monsters. Director Casey Tebo is more interested in fun with this holiday horror entry, and it boasts a great cast that includes Devon Sawa and Bruce Campbell.
Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toymaker
Mickey Rooney plays the toy maker who dons a Santa suit and makes lethal toys for all naughty boys and girls in this franchise entry. While it’s the allure of killer toys and that eye-catching cover box that entices, there’s an unexpected sci-fi slant here that makes Part 5 one of the more memorable sequels. As in, it’s not the supernatural causing the toys to spring to murderous life to punish the naughty. That makes for an over-the-top sci-fi finale.
Nekrotronic
This Australian horror-comedy from director Kiah Roache-Turner centers on an insidious demonic invasion over Christmastime. Only in this instance, the demons intend to use the internet to collect souls. It’s up to unwitting protagonist Howard (Ben O’Toole), who discovers he’s part of a magical sect of Necromancers, to defend the world from the demons. The story itself draws from William Gibson’s Neuromancer. Ghostbusters, The Exorcist, and The Matrix also influence this wacky horror-comedy that sees Monica Bellucci vamp it up as the Demon Queen. This one is for those that love their horror-comedies on the silly side with a hefty dose of splatstick.
Await Further Instructions
The Milgram family have gathered together for Christmas dinner celebrations only to find themselves trapped within their home by a mysterious black substance right outside. The TV transmits a single-line message, “Await further instructions.” Paranoia turns their night of holiday cheer into a dinner party full of carnage. The holiday horror film leans into its dour premise and familiar dysfunction- a holiday staple- through the lens of technology.
Alien Raiders
A few days before Christmas, shoppers and employees are wrapping up before closing time at a small-town store when masked gunmen burst in, kill a few people and take the rest hostage. They’re not robbers, though, but rogue scientists trying to determine which of the remaining hostages are aliens in disguise. This one’s a low-budget sci-fi horror flick in the vein of The Thing, but at Christmas. What it lacks in budget, Alien Raiders makes up for in creativity.
Adult Swim Yule Log (aka The Fireplace)
Adult Swim’s 2022 holiday yule log presentation unravels into a gory feature film, courtesy of director Casper Kelly (“Too Many Cooks”). Kelly takes a kitchen sink approach to the horror madness that must be seen to be believed. No really; this dabbles in just about every subgenre of horror, especially sci-fi. Bring the spiked egg nog and buckle up for this unhinged slice of holiday horror.
Another Wolfcop
When an eccentric businessman arrives in town with a new team and brewery, it’s up to Lou, his partner Tina, and a few unexpected allies to save the day. Lowell Dean’s follow-up to the raucous horror-comedy WolfCop is bigger, better, sillier, and more monster-filled. Not only is this sequel set over the holidays, but its central plot toe dips a bit into sci-fi territory. There’s also the matter of Willie (Jonathan Cherry), who has a pesky new alien problem to deal with.
Night of the Comet
Valley girls navigate life post-apocalypse when a comet comes along during the holidays. Everything about this horror-comedy screams Christmas, from the setting to the décor to a major character dressing up as Santa to surprise our favorite sisters from the Valley. Besides, any excuse to watch Valley girls take on zombies, mad scientists, and ruthless survivors is worthy.
