Sinister and Doctor Strange duo Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill are back with their brand new Blumhouse horror movie The Black Phone, an adaptation of Joe Hill‘s short story that premiered to rave reviews at Fantastic Fest over the weekend.
Meagan wrote in her review for Bloody Disgusting, “Derrickson and Cargill revive the same traits and structure of Sinister to transform Hill’s short into a feature-length nightmare full of ghostly kids, violence, and a trio of unforgettable performances.”
The Black Phone will release in theaters on January 28, 2022, with Ethan Hawke starring as “The Grabber,” a sadistic killer. The character is front and center on the film’s official poster, which debuted over the weekend, and we’ve learned that the sinister mask Hawke wears in the movie was actually designed by Tom Savini and his partner, Jason Baker.
Savini and Baker designed the film’s mask(s), seen below, for Callosum Studios! It’s a big deal for Savini’s work to be featured in a big screen horror movie again, to say the least. Most recently, Savini and Baker have been designing masks for World Wrestling Entertainment, helping characters including The Fiend and Alexa Bliss bring a little terror to the squared circle.
Expect a trailer for this one soon.
In The Black Phone…
“After being abducted by a child killer and locked in a soundproof basement, a 13-year-old boy starts receiving calls on a disconnected phone from the killer’s previous victims.”
Ethan Hawke (Sinister) and James Ransone (Sinister, It: Chapter Two) lead the cast, which also includes Jeremy Davies (“Hannibal”), Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw.
Derrickson, Cargill and Jason Blum, for Blumhouse, are producing the film. Universal and Blumhouse will present the Crooked Highway Productions. Joe Hill is an executive producer.
