Putting together a Scream movie is never an easy task, to say the least, especially when Wes Craven is no longer with us. There’s a reason it took eleven years – the same distance of time between Scream 3 and Scream 4, it’s interesting to note – but Radio Silence made it look easy with this year’s Scream, slipping right back into those Craven vibes from the 1990s.
The filmmakers won’t have as much time to develop their vision this time around, however, as Scream 6 has already been announced – and it’s releasing on March 31, 2023.
Much the same way the pressure was on for Craven, Kevin Williamson and company in 1997 when Scream 2 was ordered up and fast-tracked, the Radio Silence team is surely feeling the pressure right now. What do they have in mind for Scream 6, you ask? Chatting with Empire Magazine, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have made their first comments.
“This movie has to be willing to risk it all in order to subvert all of those expectations,” Gillet tells Empire.
He adds, “And we’re so far down the rabbit hole of Scream movies, that it’s all up for grabs at this point.” It sounds like everything is on the table… and nobody is safe.
James Vanderbilt & Guy Busick are also back to write Scream 6.
Creator Kevin Williamson and the third member of Radio Silence, Chad Villella, are executive producing alongside Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Peter Oillataguerre.
Released in theaters on January 14, this year’s new Scream movie has scared up just under $140 million at the worldwide box office – $81 million of that made domestically. For the sake of comparison, Scream 4 made less than $100 million worldwide back in 2011, with Radio Silence’s franchise relaunch proving that Ghostface’s knife is as sharp as ever.
We’ll report more on Scream 6 as we learn it.
If you haven’t yet seen it, Scream 2022 – which is technically Scream 5, of course – is now streaming on Paramount+. You can also rent or buy the film digitally through other platforms.
