A new female-fronted take on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was announced back in 2020, with Margot Robbie starring and Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey) on board to write.
Alas, Margot Robbie tells Vanity Fair this week, the project is no longer setting sail.
“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been really cool,” Robbie explained to Vanity Fair. “But I guess they don’t want to do it.”
When it was announced back in 2020, the Margot Robbie-led Pirates movie was said to be a “wholly original story with new characters,” rather than a spinoff/sequel to the franchise.
We had also learned at the time that a franchise reboot was in the works as well, which may or may not still be happening. Jerry Bruckheimer was on board to produce both films.
Stay tuned for more on all things Pirates of the Caribbean as we learn it.
