It has somehow already been five years since the release of Guillermo del Toro‘s love story The Shape of Water, which was nominated for a whopping thirteen Academy Awards in 2018. The film ended up winning Best Picture while del Toro took home the Oscar for Best Director, and the Fox Searchlight movie also ended its worldwide run with just under $200 million.
All these years later, Searchlight Pictures has shared a never-before-seen teaser trailer for The Shape of Water, cut together five years ago but never actually shown to the public.
Guillermo del Toro himself explained on Twitter today, quote-tweeting Searchlight’s tweet, “Watch this one- we never released it and it was a concept I championed but- alas.”
It’s a simple, elegant, and gorgeous teaser, taking place entirely underwater and giving us a glimpse of both Doug Jones‘ Amphibian Man and Sally Hawkins‘ Elisa Esposito.
The two embrace underwater with a classic love song playing over the visuals, essentially bringing to life the memorable poster art that was officially released for the movie.
