HBO’s “The Last of Us” debuted this Sunday, with its premiere pulling in 4.7 million viewers, an impressive feat for the video game adaptation series.
HBO Max unveiled a new trailer today teasing the arduous journey ahead for its lead protagonists, highlighting the characters, post-apocalyptic terrain, and horrors they’ll encounter along the way. Check it out below.
“The Last of Us” takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.
Pedro Pascal (“The Mandalorian”) is starring in the series as Joel and Bella Ramsey (“Game of Thrones”) is playing Ellie. Gabriel Luna (Terminator: Dark Fate) is playing Tommy, the brother of Pascal’s Joel. Storm Reid, Anna Torv, Jeffrey Pierce, Nick Offerman, Merle Dandridge, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett and Con O’Neil will also star in the series.
Craig Mazin (“Chernobyl”) developed the series for HBO, and worked directly alongside Neil Druckmann to write and executive produce the small screen adaptation of the acclaimed video game.
That it’s only one episode in means there’s still plenty of time to catch up on what’s quickly establishing the series as event TV. From my review: “Mazin, who co-wrote and executive produced with Druckmann, captures the video game’s core essence and story beats while expanding upon it in triumphant ways organic to the source material. How Mazin and Druckmann build upon backstories and flesh out supporting characters leads to some of the finest hours of television of all time. That it’s so exceptionally and meticulously crafted means that it has effectively shattered the ceiling for video game adaptions.”
New episodes premiere Sundays at 9 pm ET on HBO and HBO Max.
