DreadXP is headed once again to PAX East in Boston, bringing along with them demos for their upcoming titles. Included in the bunch this time are hands-on demos for Joseph “Akabaka” Hunter’s Sucker for Love: Date to Die For, John Szymanski and Evan Szymanski ‘s My Friendly Neighborhood, and MANGLEDmaw Games’ Amanda the Adventurer.
Taking place from March 23 to March 26, DreadXP will have a dedicated booth at PAX East on the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center show floor for the entire convention, showcasing the three titles that are expected to arrive later this year.
A found-footage style horror title, Amanda the Adventurer is expected to arrive on Steam on April 25. The game sees players discover a box full of VHS tapes containing a long-lost children’s show starring the plucky Amanda the Adventurer and her cowardly yet loyal sidekick, Woolie the Sheep. As you might expect, things turn quickly once you begin watching the videos. At first glance, they seem innocently childish, depicting two best buddies in an edutainment-styled escapade. However, the longer the videos are watched, the more a creeping, sickening feeling emerges that something in the tapes is watching back.
Slated to arrive this summer on Steam, My Friendly Neighborhood sees you step into the work-boots of Gordon, a repairman tasked with shutting down the sudden broadcast of a canceled children’s TV show, “Our Friendly Neighborhood”. Back in the day, fans loved the show’s colorful cast of kooky puppet pals who took them on educational adventures and delighted them with fun games. But the show’s popularity waned over time, and the studio had to ultimately shut its doors. Then, one night years later, the show suddenly reappears for a surprise encore.
Lastly, Lovecraftian lovers will be able to dig into Akabaka’s follow-up to Sucker for Love: First Date later this summer, as well. Sucker for Love: Date to Die For features a “Shadow over Innsmouth” spin, where a new female protagonist named Stardust must escape from a rural town overrun with fanatical cultists while being pursued by new eldritch “beauties”. Featuring a mash-up of Lovecraftian horror, ’90s anime, and old school dating sims, Date to Die For aims to faithfully recreate the most memorable and nostalgic aspects of each, focusing on the often neglected aspect of Lovecraft’s stories: the tangible madmen and monsters under the effects of gods, as opposed to the eldritch gods themselves.
