The Evil Dead franchise has taken a bit of a nothing’s-off-the-table approach in recent years, with Fede Alvarez’s remake in 2013 being followed by the return of the original franchise in the Starz series “Ash vs. Evil Dead.” There was a time when we felt the remake probably meant no more Ash Williams in the franchise, but thankfully that didn’t end up being the case.
Up next, the franchise returns to theaters with Evil Dead Rise on April 21, 2023, a brand new movie that once again introduces brand new characters and a fresh new storyline. Does the existence of Evil Dead Rise mean we’ll never see the return of Mia (Jane Levy) from Fede Alvarez’s movie? According to creator/producer Sam Raimi, everything is still on the table.
Raimi tells Empire Magazine, “That character, Mia, was great, so I was very interested [in a mashup movie with the original franchise’s Ash]. We had been talking about an ‘Evil Dead IV’ for the other branch of that universe, and we were worried a little bit about a collision. Ash vs. Evil Dead is what that morphed into. But I always thought there was room for both.”
“I still think there’s room for all sorts of Evil Dead movies,” Raimi continues. “I don’t think they cancel each other out.”
The only thing we likely won’t be seeing from the Evil Dead franchise in the future is the return of Bruce Campbell as Ash. At least in live action, Campbell has retired from the role.
Of course, that doesn’t rule out a potential animated Evil Dead project…
