Over 35 years later, Tim Burton is hard at work directing Beetlejuice 2, a sequel to the 1980s classic that will bring both Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder back to their roles.
Chatting with Empire, Keaton – who is of course reprising the role of Beetlejuice – teases a handmade approach to the upcoming sequel that will channel the spirit of the original.
Keaton explains, “We’re doing it exactly like we did the first movie. There’s a woman in the great waiting room for the afterlife literally with a fishing line – I want people to know this because I love it – tugging on the tail of a cat to make it move.”
“Making stuff up, making stuff happen, improvising and riffing; but literally handmade stuff like people creating things with their hands and building something,” Keaton continues. “[It’s] fuckin’ great. It’s the most fun I’ve had working on a movie in I can’t tell you how long.”
Warner Bros. brings the sequel to theaters on September 6, 2024.
Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday,” Scream VI) is joining Michael Keaton in the long-awaited sequel, with Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara both returning.
Monica Bellucci (Irreversible) will be playing Beetlejuice’s wife!
No word yet on plot details, but it’s known that Jenna Ortega will be playing the daughter of Lydia Deetz, the character Winona Ryder is of course returning to play.
Willem Dafoe and Justin Theroux recently joined the cast as well, with frequent Burton collaborator Danny Elfman coming back to compose the film’s score.
The original Beetlejuice was directed by Burton in 1988 and has become a cult favorite. It starred Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as ghosts who haunt their old home. When a little girl (Winona Ryder) accidentally unleashes a mischievous ghost (Michael Keaton), the ghosts try to drive the homeowners (Catherine O’Hara and Jeffrey Jones) out of the house.
