A24 released their latest critically acclaimed new horror movie Talk to Me in 2,340 theaters here in the United States over the weekend, with early projections anticipating a roughly $5 million domestic total for the opening weekend. But positive word of mouth and strong buzz allowed the film to shatter those expectations, scaring up $10 million over the weekend.
The official number for the weekend is $10,028,632, giving Talk to Me the #6 placement on the domestic box office charts during the #Barbenheimer phenomenon’s second weekend.
Directed by brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, Talk to Me was made on a reported production budget of just $4.5 million, which the movie was able to earn back in its first day of release. Important to note, however, that A24 acquired the film out of Sundance for a reported “high seven figures,” and the company also spent a good deal of money to market the release.
Without knowing exactly how much A24 spent on the movie it’s hard to know at what point it’ll become profitable for them, but it’s safe to say they’re celebrating today either way.
Talk to Me is yet another win for the horror genre this year, a small indie out of Australia that is once again proving that there’s an insatiable appetite for horror at the box office. Even with Barbie and Oppenheimer dominating the discourse, it’s a testament to just how good Talk to Me is that it was able to break through the noise and make its own mark in theaters.
The brutal terror of Talk to Me unfolds when “a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand; they become hooked on the new thrill until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces.” Sophia Wilde, Miranda Otto, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Djanji, and Zoe Terakes star in the A24 horror hit.
In her Sundance review for BD, Meagan Navarro wrote, “Talk to Me delivers an intense, nightmarish horror movie that’ll leave you breathless.” Her review continued, “There’s a refreshing ruthlessness to this cautionary tale that plays like a surge of adrenaline; it makes for one hell of an introduction to Danny and Michael Philippou’s brand of horror.”
