If you’re reading this, it’s already too late! The game has begun, and now you’re a player…
Don’t Play This Game is a legacy solo tabletop roleplaying game. A mysterious entity curses the player; they must play the game, or else bad things will happen to them. As the game progresses, the entity will select events, like a series of nightmares or an ally going missing. The player will document the events, including what happened, how it makes them feel, and what effects it has on them. But this game goes beyond just journaling. Occasionally, players will be asked to complete specific tasks or create artifacts, including visiting their local library, taking photos of a nearby abandoned building, or even constructing a crude charm!
Once the event is complete, the entity will select another and another as the story unfolds until the player finally breaks free or loses. But the game doesn’t end there. Once a player finishes their story, it’s time to pass it on to the next player! This is a legacy game, so the story will continue to grow and expand as it’s passed to other players.
Don’t Play This Game was created by Charlie and Barney Menzies, two creators behind the award-winning game SHIVER: Roleplaying Tales in the Strange & Unknown. They were inspired by classic found footage movies, like The Blair Witch Project, Marble Hornets, and the V/H/S series, and set out to translate that experience to the tabletop. If successfully crowdfunded, Don’t Play This Game will feature artwork from creators like Trevor Henderson (and more artists to be announced soon).
Don’t Play This Game is currently raising funds on Kickstarter. You can also head over to their website to download a playable demo of their game.
