A huge streaming hit for Hulu last year, Dan Trachtenberg’s Emmy-nominated horror movie Prey is now available on 4K and Blu-ray, and this week 20th Century Home Entertainment has released a Deleted Scene that’s included in the physical release’s bonus features package.
The deleted scene is titled “Treetop Chase,” and indeed it spotlights an intense sequence wherein the Predator chases hero character Naru across the treetops. This sequence never made it into the movie, and all that exists is a rough pre-visualization of the concept.
Trachtenberg tells Polygon, “The pre-vis sequence… I was so stoked on. But I was worried about [the treetop chase] being too fancy for the movie. And we really had to nail the execution for it to not feel goofy when so much of the movie and its action is quite grounded. As excited as I was for that kind of physicality, of Naru and that style of chase to be on screen, I was quite nervous. But I loved the way that the cut clamp was used in that sequence, and thought it was quite a clever thing for Naru to be doing. So I’m happy that can exist now.”
One thing this early pre-viz makes crystal clear is how good Sarah Schachner’s score for Prey is, bringing a level of intensity even to the janky computer graphics on display here. You can really get a sense of how this scene would’ve played out on screen. Watch below.
Amber Midthunder stars in Hulu’s Prey as a Comanche woman who goes against gender norms and traditions to become a warrior, bravely taking down a Predator in the process.
Set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, Prey is the story of Naru. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.
Prey is nominated for a whopping SIX Emmy Awards this year, including “Outstanding TV Movie,” as well as “Writing,” “Directing,” “Editing,” and “Music Composition.”
