It wasn’t until I started writing this article that I remembered something. A new Hellboy movie, titled Hellboy: The Crooked Man, is coming soon, likely to see release sometime this year.
Ketchup Entertainment acquired the rights last year to Millennium Media’s reboot, which will star Jack Kesy in the title role. But we’ll report more on that project in the coming months.
In the meantime, Deadline has announced today that a documentary on Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, titled Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, is also coming soon.
Deadline reports that Nacelle (“The Toys That Made Us”) has acquired the doc, with no release date announced at this time. The documentary “tells the story of Mignola — one of the most successful independent comic book creators, who has inspired generations of writers and artists — and how he came to create a world-renowned comic book universe.
“The film includes never-before-seen interviews conducted with the creator at his studio, drawing demonstrations, behind the scenes footage from workshops and comic book conventions, and interviews with some of the most influential people in entertainment.”
Guillermo del Toro was interviewed for Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, along with Neil Gaiman, Patton Oswalt, Ron Perlman, Doug Jones, Adam Savage, and more.
Kevin Konrad Hanna and Jim Demonakos directed the upcoming Mike Mignola documentary. Stay tuned for more information, including a trailer and release date.
The Hellboy character first appeared in 1993, and in the past three decades the character has been kept alive with countless comic books, video games, and live action feature films.
Ron Perlman and David Harbour have both played Hellboy on screen.
