A few years back, Arboreta Games had announced that they were working on their next game, the first-person psychological horror title It Sleeps Below the Haar. While it never materialized back in Fall 2022 as originally planned, It Sleeps Below the Haar will instead be released on May 31 on Steam.
Intended as a “short, self-contained experience,” It Sleeps Below the Haar takes place in 1958 Scotland in a secluded coastal village. You play as a research student, who has traveled to the small coastal village of Kellas Bay to study the region’s unique and strange ecology. You’ll embark on a surreal journey from the lush forests and ancient cave systems surrounding the village, to the freezing depths of the North Sea in order to comprehend the primordial natural forces responsible for the area’s curious phenomena.
It Sleeps Below the Haar aims to immerse players in the experience, featuring not only “a passionately designed world with handcrafted atmospheric sound design and music,” you’ll also encounter a variety of characters speaking North East Scotland’s Doric language, while also carrying out tasks as you progress in the story.
Seeing as you’re a research student, you’ll also be conducting scientific data collection, including samples and photographs to further the experience and delving deeper into the lore.
