Ti West and Mia Goth complete their decade-hopping horror trilogy with MaXXXine, a sequel to both X and Pearl that’s now playing in theaters nationwide courtesy of A24.
A24 released MaXXXine in 2,450 theaters here in the United States over the weekend, with the final installment in Ti West’s trilogy scaring up $6.7 million in its domestic debut. At the worldwide box office, MaXXXine debuted to an impressive $7.8 million over the weekend.
Both of the previous films were released into theaters in 2022, with X opening to $4.2 million and Pearl opening to $3.1 million. That gives MaXXXine the highest opening out of the entire trilogy, more than doubling the domestic opening of the previous installment in the saga.
X finished its box office run with $14.7 million worldwide while Pearl made $9.8 million in total at the worldwide box office, and there’s a good chance MaXXXine will soon become the overall highest grossing movie in the trilogy. The film no doubt benefitted from the fanbase the two previous installments built up over the past two years, as well as a bigger marketing campaign from A24. On that note, it’s unquestionably a more marketable movie than Pearl, with the 1980s approach surely appealing more to modern audiences than a 1918-set prequel.
No word yet on an at-home release date for MaXXXine. Stay tuned for more.
Mia Goth stars in the 1980s-set MaXXXine alongside an incredible ensemble featuring Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, Sophie Thatcher, and Kevin Bacon.
Here’s the official synopsis from A24: “In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.”
