‘King Spawn’ – Jason Blum Teases New Screenplay for Long-Awaited ‘Spawn’ Movie

We’ve been talking about Blumhouse’s planned Spawn movie for many years now, and each new update on the project tends to be more like a non-update. But just days before San Diego Comic-Con gets underway, both Jason Blum and Todd McFarlane have taken to social media to share an image that seems to suggest the movie is finally getting off the ground.

At the very least, a new script has been written…

Blum and McFarlane have shared the same photo onto X this afternoon, showing us the title page for a script titled King Spawn, written by Matt Mixon, Malcolm Spellman (Falcon and the Winter Soldier) & Scott Silver (Joker). Check out the tweet below.

It would seem Blumhouse’s upcoming movie has evolved over the years into an adaptation of the King Spawn comic book storyline, which was launched by Image Comics back in 2021.

In King Spawn, “When one of the vilest creatures ever imprisoned in Hell is released back onto Earth, Spawn follows the clues right into a trap set just for him. But why does Kincaid want Spawn to ascend the throne of Hell, and what of the prophecy of the King Spawn?”‘

It’s been a long hard road out of development hell with his brand new Spawn feature, which Todd McFarlane had originally planned to direct. Jamie Foxx had been attached to play the title character at one point, but we have no idea if that’s still the plan. Stay tuned.

Spawn first appeared in Spawn #1 back in May 1992. The character first came to the screen with a 1997 movie from New Line starring Michael Jai White, and he got the animated series treatment courtesy of HBO in the late 1990s. Keith David voiced Spawn in the series.

In the comics, Spawn is a former black-ops agent who makes a deal with a demon after being betrayed and killed. The demon allows him to return to Earth, but when he returns, five years have passed, his wife has moved on, and he roams Earth as a disfigured spawn of hell.
