Those of you liminal space horror fans have another game to dive into with Hillfort Games and Acrylic Pixel’s Ten Bells. Slated for a Q3 2024 release (or later this month, according to the Steam page), Ten Bells takes place in a Victorian-era pub steeped in mystery and ghostly anomalies.
The game centres around Clara, who is trapped in the aforementioned pub, with the obvious goal of escaping. Drawing inspiration from games like The Backrooms, Ten Bells shakes things up with the liminal space anomaly genre by adding horror narratives into the anomalies. The story unfolds partly via the anomalies themselves, but also through story-related objects appearing on the shelves in the starting area of the game.
Much like recent titles such as Shift 87 or The Stairway 7, you’ll be hunting down anomalies within the environment in order to progress (and survive). If all seems well, continue forward; if anything looks different, turn back. The player starts off at ‘The Bell’ (Level 1) with the goal being to escape the pub by correctly identifying the anomalies in order to progress towards ‘The Ten Bells’ pub (Level 10).
There are over 30 anomalies to discover in order to progress in the game. Some can be subtle, while others are surreal, scary or deadly. The developers tout the game’s short playtime (15 minutes to an hour) as being perfect for a captivating stream or a chilling solo session. It’s not clear yet whether we’ll receive a demo for Ten Bells prior to release, but we’ll definitely keep you posted.
