When you think of games where you play as zombies, generally the first ones you think of are Left 4 Dead or Stubbs the Zombie. Solo developer Arfhis The Wizard is looking to insert their game into the mix with Necrowave, a 2D Metroidvania platformer “about the emotional life of a zombie stuck in a microwave.” Seriously.
There’s obviously a bit more to it than that. Necrowave is inspired by Hollow Knight and Samurai Jack, with the latter seemingly being the inspiration for the game’s graphics. Right away, Necrowave sounds tough, thanks to its combat being more “critical thinking based” rather than straight-up hack ‘n slash. How so? Almost everything in the game dies in one hit, including you. As such, you’ll need to use those thinking skills to succeed.
Seeing as this is a Metroidvania, you’ll be traversing a world that’s chock full of different areas and secrets. Of course, you’ll need to upgrade your abilities to be able to gain access to those new areas.
Currently, Arfthis is developing Necrowave through his Patreon, where he posts regular updates and demos (the latest version being 7.0), including older versions that you can check out for free! He’s also been active with showing off progress on the game’s animations on his YouTube page. The eventual goal is to get the game onto Steam, where you can currently wishlist Necrowave.
Thanks to 80 Level for the heads up!
