From the writer-director of Ex Machina and Annihilation, Alex Garland‘s new A24 horror movie Men just debuted in U.S. theaters over the weekend, performing like you’d probably expect a smaller A24 horror movie to perform at the box office right now. Men opened in 2,212 theaters across the United States, scaring up $3,293,030 in theaters over the weekend.
That puts Men in the #5 spot on the current domestic box office chart, under Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange 2, Downton Abbey, The Bad Guys, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
In the #6 spot right underneath Men is A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, now in its 8th week of release. The film has impressively legged its way to $56.9 million worldwide.
Meagan Navarro wrote in her Men review for Bloody Disgusting, “Alex Garland’s adherence to the abstract will be divisive, but those that don’t mind enigmatic descents into surrealistic, gruesome horror will find this a trip worth taking.” She also notes that the latest A24 horror film “bides its time with a measured unsettling until an insane, unforgettable third act.”
Men stars Jessie Buckley, Rory Kinnear and Paapa Essiedu.
“In the aftermath of a personal tragedy, Harper (Buckley) retreats alone to the beautiful English countryside, hoping to have found a place to heal. But someone or something from the surrounding woods appears to be stalking her. What begins as simmering dread becomes a fully-formed nightmare, inhabited by her darkest memories and fears in visionary filmmaker Alex Garland’s shape-shifting new horror film.”
Alex Garland wrote the script and directed A24’s Men.
