As promised, the pro wrestling company AEW delivered the first ever “Texas Chain Saw Massacre Death Match” live on TBS last night, a cross promotion with Gun Interactive’s Texas Chain Saw Massacre: The Game that pit Jeff Hardy up against Jeff Jarrett in a match uniquely themed after the multiplayer horror game that releases tomorrow (August 18).
We went into last night’s show having absolutely no idea what the hell a “Texas Chain Saw Massacre Death Match” even is, and now that we’ve seen it, well, we’re still not quite sure.
The “match” began in the backstage area, with Hardy and Jarrett – plus a whole bunch of other interfering wrestlers – beating each other up. Despite the commentary team doing their best to sell the backstage brawl as a spectacle the likes of which they’d never seen before, it was mostly like any other backstage fight we’ve seen in the world of pro wrestling. A bit “bloodier” than most, however, as a bucket of fake blood was dumped onto Jarrett’s head early on.
Once the match spilled out into the ring, tables, guitars, and even a big ole meat hammer were added to the mix. Again, it was more or less your standard “Hardcore” match with vague “Texas Chain Saw Massacre” theming… that is, until Leatherface showed up.
Towards the end of the match, someone dressed in a full Leatherface costume came out wielding a chainsaw, recreating the iconic “Chainsaw Dance” from the final moments of Tobe Hooper’s horror classic. Leatherface also went after Jeff Jarrett’s wife/manager Karen Jarrett, allowing AEW to essentially recreate Leatherface’s attack on Sally from the 1974 movie.
Jeff Jarrett ultimately won the match in the wake of all the gimmicky hijinks, and he was awarded with the first ever “Texas Chain Saw Massacre Death Match Championship,” a red & black championship belt emblazed with Leatherface’s image on the face plate. The belt was the coolest aspect of the match, immortalizing the late Gunnar Hansen’s place in the bizarre annals of professional wrestling. If AEW starts selling replicas, we’re damn sure buying.
If you’re into this sort of thing, you can watch highlights from the first ever “Texas Chain Saw Massacre Death Match” below. Wrestling is weird. Horror is weird. When you put the two of them together, for better or worse, there’s nothing quite like it. Just ask Chucky…
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre will be launching on August 18 on Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store, and will be launching into Game Pass on Xbox and PC. The events take place *before* Tobe Hooper’s original classic.
