Fans have been asking for a sequel to 2019’s Alita: Battle Angel for the past few years, but all has been quiet on that front aside from director Robert Rodriguez making it clear that he’d love to return to that world. Whether or not we get an Alita sequel is entirely in the hands of Disney at this point, as Disney of course now owns the former Twentieth Century Fox.
But the silence has been broken at least a little bit this week, with producer Jon Landau telling Deadline that conversations are happening and he’s still hungry to bring Alita back to life.
“There’s a little film called Alita: Battle Angel that we’d love to circle back and do a sequel to,” Landau tells the outlet. “We’re talking to Robert about that; hopefully that comes to fruition.”
Back in 2019, Alita: Battle Angel pulled in $404 million worldwide on a $170 million production budget, but whether or not that was enough to justify a sequel is up to Disney’s executives.
Rosa Salazar starred in Battle Angel as Alita, a deactivated cyborg who is revived, but can’t remember anything of her past and goes on a quest to find out who she is.
The film came to an end with a sequel tease… here’s hoping we get that movie someday.
