Starring Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill, Andrzej Zulawksi‘s Possession is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and we’ve learned today that a brand new 4K restoration is on the way.
Metrograph Pictures will be bringing the restoration to theaters & at home on October 1, as well as to Fantastic Fest and Beyond Fest. It expands to theaters nationwide on October 15.
“Banned upon release in 1981, Żuławski’s stunningly choreographed nightmare of a marriage unraveling is an experience unlike any other. Professional spy Mark (Neill) returns to his West Berlin home to find his wife Anna (Adjani) insistent on a divorce. As Anna’s frenzied behavior becomes ever more alarming, Mark discovers a truth more sinister than his wildest suspicions. With its pulsating score, visceral imagery, and some of the most haunting performances ever captured on screen, Possession is cinematic delirium at its most intoxicating.”
Our own Brian Keiper recently celebrated Possession‘s 40th anniversary here on BD, writing, “Few movies depict emotional turmoil as effectively and daringly as Andrzej Zulawksi’s Possession. It is a challenging and sometimes inscrutable film, both for the mind and the emotions. Zulawski struggles through a number of deep issues throughout the course of the film; issues that speak to some of humanity’s deepest pains and fears. In many ways it is about loss— loss of political ideals, loss of faith, and loss of innocence. But most of all, Possession is about the fear, pain, and anger that comes from the loss of a marriage.”
