Musician-turned-director Flying Lotus (Kuso) recently directed a segment in Bloody Disgusting’s V/H/S/99, and his next project will be a sci-fi thriller titled Ash. Today, EW brings a first look at leads Eiza Gonzalez and Aaron Paul in the mysterious project.
Ash is said to center on ”a woman (Eiza González) who wakes up on a distant planet and finds the crew of her space station viciously killed, and must then decide if she can trust the man (Aaron Paul) sent to rescue her. But as their investigation into what happened sets in motion a terrifying chain of events, he begins to wonder how innocent she really is.”
Paranoia and trust issues in space? We’re in.
Gonzalez told EW, “We don’t wanna really give away too much, but I would consider it like a sci-fi/thriller horror movie.”
Neill Blomkamp (District 9) will be producing the upcoming feature. Iko Uwais (The Raid: Redemption), Beulah Koale, and Kate Elliott also star.
As if none of this is enticing enough, Flying Lotus will also compose an original score for Ash.
From the sounds of it, music was vital to the production. “Music gives you an ambiance. It definitely sets you up,” Gonzalez told EW. “So having this specific movie and his specific music being made at the same time was so incredibly helpful. Even little details he gave us, like, ‘I want such-and-such instrument predominantly throughout the movie,’ gave us a completely different vibe, especially for me and Aaron. We have a lot of scenes together, and our dynamic is super intense and crucial in the film, so it really made a gigantic difference.”
“We are building something fresh and unique with Ash and having Eiza and Aaron in this world just makes it flames. They are absolute magic makers, brave and equally inspiring. All that to say… We ‘bout to kill this shit,” said Flying Lotus previously.
The original screenplay for Ash was written by Jonni Remmler. XYZ Films and GFC Films produce, with Blomkamp exec producing alongside Echo Lake Entertainment.
