‘Birds of Prey’ Falls in Love With a Female Anti-Hero [The Lady Killers Podcast]

“I’m telling you, if you want boys to respect you, you have to show them that you’re serious. Blow something up. Shoot someone. Nothing gets a guy’s attention like violence.”

We’re told that behind every successful man is a badass woman, a partner in crime perhaps pulling the strings. But what if that man is a murderous psychopath? What do his actions say about the woman at his side? And who will she be when she steps out of his shadow? Harley Quinn was created to be a sidekick and romantic partner for the iconic criminal Joker known for terrorizing Gotham under Batman’s watchful eye. But Harley gets her own story in the 2020 film Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. Cathy Yan’s girly-pop take on the superhero genre sees this iconic bad girl step into the spotlight and find the courage to stand on her own.

Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) is a psychiatrist-turned-criminal who’s just been dumped by “Mistah J” – aka Batman’s #1 enemy Joker. After years of enjoying his powerful protection, Harley finds herself vulnerable for the first time in years – and realizes that half of Gotham now wants her dead. Chief among her own enemies is Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor), a thin-skinned nepo-criminal trying to amass his own power. Harley talks her way out of a gruesome death at Roman’s hands by promising to find a valuable diamond with the power to unlock an even bigger payday. Unfortunately, that stone is currently in the intestines of Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco), a street-wise orphan who picked the wrong pocket. As the Men of Gotham descend on this cagey tween, her fate lies in the hands of a small group of incredible female fighters.

The Lady Killers kick off Hot Girl Summer with a new episode about five of the hottest Lady Killers around. Co-hosts Jenn AdamsMae Shults, Rocco T. Thompson, and Sammie Kuykendall will adopt their crime fighting personas to chat about deviations from the source material, female anti-heroes, hair ties, and why this film is known as a box office disappointment. What do we think of Harley in this iteration? Would we prefer Joker to be present in the film? Is there anyone more charming than Ewan McGregor and what inspired Chris Messina to go so hard? So strap on your bullet-proof bustiers and protect the girls in a slumber party gab sesh filled with fun guns and glitter.
