Things have been fairly quiet regarding the development of Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare. According to developer Fantastico Studio, the project is still alive, though not in the way you might expect (more on that in a bit). In light of director Ruggero Deodato‘s passing, the developer has decided to switch things up, announcing the visual novel game, Cannibal Tales.
You’re probably wondering just how this all makes sense. According to the developers, development on Borneo: a Jungle Nightmare has been halted, due to a lack of funds. Sadly, attempts to secure additional funding haven’t been successful. According to Fantastico, they don’t even have the necessary resources to complete a vertical slice of the game.
Therefore, the team has decided to pivot, returning to the original idea with their collaboration with Deodato. “We will create a visual novel using the master’s unpublished screenplay, and the project will be called Cannibal Tales. The story will be divided into three parts, with different protagonists whose stories are intricately intertwined, and the theme of cannibalism will always be present in various forms and aspects.”
Cannibal Tales will be a visual novel adventure game that will consist of three episodes:
1- The Interview
2- The Embalmer
3- Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare
According to the devs, this project has the necessary development funds, with the plan to release the first episode by Winter 2023.
“Our hope is that the sales of the first two episodes will enable us to find the necessary funds to complete the third and final episode, “Borneo: a Jungle Nightmare,” while maintaining the same artistic direction and gameplay that we were pursuing with Ruggero Deodato.”
The first episode, “The Interview”, sees you play the role of a young and ambitious journalist. Your goal is to get a scoop that will allow you to become a partner at the newspaper that currently employs you. To do so, you decide to pursue the mystery surrounding a young survivor of a metropolitan cannibal, determined to get an interview in order to unravel the connection between the two, and understand why the survivor was spared. During the interview, your morality will be put to the test as the line between good and evil grows increasingly blurred.
Currently, you can wishlist Cannibal Tales on Steam.
