The ’90s movie franchise I Know What You Did Last Summer returns with a brand new legacy sequel in 2025, with director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson promising that the new movie will not be disregarding the events of ’98 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. The sequel starred Brandy as Julie’s roommate Karla, who survived the events of the film.
Does that mean Brandy could be making a return in next year’s legacy sequel? Last we heard, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. were in negotiations to potentially star alongside a cast of fresh new faces, and it sounds like the door is open for Brandy’s return as well.
The singer and actress tells ET Online this week, “I’ve heard some things about it. So hopefully. I don’t know how [Karla] would come back. I haven’t thought about that yet. But I know that she should come back. She should definitely come back.”
“They have [reached out],” Brandy adds. “So we’ll see what happens. I would love that.”
Madelyn Cline (“Outer Banks”) and Camila Mendes (“Riverdale”) are in talks to lead Sony’s reboot alongside Sarah Pidgeon (“Gotham”), Tyriq Withers (“Atlanta”) and Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid). Stay tuned for more casting news as we learn it.
The franchise will return to theaters on July 18, 2025.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) is on board to direct the new installment in the franchise for Sony, with Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.) writing the original draft of the screenplay. The latest draft, however, was written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson & Sam Lansky.
Jim Gillespie directed the original I Know What You Did Last Summer back in 1997, written by Kevin Williamson (Scream) and based on Lois Duncan’s novel. The film spawned sequels in 1998 and 2006. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. only came back for that first sequel.
More recently, the franchise returned with Amazon’s short-lived television series.
