Remakes and remasters have been a contentious topic in the gaming world for the better part of two decades. Developers find themselves in the seemingly impossible high wire act of evolving on a game’s past while ensuring not to alter its storied identity. And that’s even before passionate fandom input is involved.
This balance has proved to be so tricky that over the years, we have seen several remakes that fundamentally re-wrote the very essence that gave them their name in the first place.
A problem that, thankfully, Capcom’s Resident Evil remake wholeheartedly avoided. And in honor of the Resident Evil remake’s 20th anniversary, Neil and I discuss the importance of remakes and remasters, a lifelong love of Resident Evil, and the potential for more remakes of Resident Evil titles.
