One of the best-reviewed horror movies that premiered at last week’s Sundance 2022 was Watcher, which comes from director Chloe Okuno. The film comes in the wake of Okuno directing the popular segment “Storm Drain” from our V/H/S/94, which introduced the world to a new indie horror icon in the form of the sewer-dwelling Raatma.
It stars Maika Monroe (The Guest, It Follows) as a young woman who moves into a new apartment with her fiancé and is tormented by the feeling that she is being stalked by an unseen watcher in an adjacent building.
After a lengthy bidding war, Bloody Disgusting is excited to report that North American rights to the film were acquired by IFC Films/IFC Midnight and Shudder, who will release later this year.
Meagan Navarro reviewed Watcher, calling it an “atmospheric and stylish paranoid thriller.” You can also read a lengthy interview with director Chloe Okuno here.
Karl Glusman, Burn Gorman, and Ciubuciu Bogdan Alexandru also star in the thriller.
Zack Ford wrote the script, and producers include Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, Derek Dauchy, John Finemore, Aaron Kaplan, Mason Novick.
Last last week, IFC Films and Shudder also acquired Resurrection, a shocking horror thriller with a powerhouse performance by star Rebecca Hall.
