Announced back in February, Barbarian director Zach Cregger is producing Companion for New Line Cinema, and Deadline reports today that Harvey Guillén (“What We Do in the Shadows”) has joined the cast. Lukas Gage (You) and Megan Suri (It Lives Inside) have also come on board this week, joining the previously announced Jack Quaid (Scream).
Described as a sci-fi/horror movie, Companion will mark the directorial debut of Drew Hancock, who also wrote the script. At this time, plot details are under wraps.
THR reports, “Companion was won by New Line in a hot horror auction near the beginning of the year. It was initially going to act as BoulderLight and Cregger’s follow-up to Barbarian before the filmmaker switched tracks to focus on his own script, Weapons, also now casting and at New Line. But the team helped Companion land not just a home but greenlit the start of production, backing Hancock to make his directorial debut.”
BoulderLight’s Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz will also produce along with Vertigo’s Roy Lee. BoulderLight’s Tracy Rosenblum and Vertigo’s Andrew Childs will exec produce.
On a related note, New Line just linked up with BoulderLight Pictures to have the Barbarian producers develop “high concept” genre movies for the studio, signing a first-look deal with the company. Their hope is that the Barbarian team will be part of a new wave of genre entertainment for New Line, so expect to hear a lot more from BoulderLight this year.
