James Wan and Ingrid Bisu teased their fascination with body horror by coming up with the story idea behind last year’s Malignant, directed by Wan and written by Akela Cooper. Now they’re taking that fascination further with Cosmetic, a body horror movie set within the beauty industry.
Per Deadline, Cosmetic is based on a story idea by Wan and Bisu. R. H. Norman and Micheline Pitt are attached to write the screenplay and direct, and the film has been acquired by Screen Gems.
The body horror feature “is set in the beauty industry, colliding the worlds of glamour and body horror in a supernatural tale of one girl’s deadly pursuit of perfection.”
Bisu previously shared with Bloody Disgusting the body horror origins that inspired Malignant, saying “I love watching documentaries about medical anomalies, twins, parasitic twins, teratomas. So that’s where this idea came from, I pitched it to James, and he said, ‘Wow, this is really interesting. How would that work?’ I went online, did all my research about it, and I found some crazy things.” It’ll be fascinating to see how Bisu’s inspirations manifested into a new body horror story idea.
Scott Strauss and Michael Bitar are overseeing the project for Screen Gems. Wan and Michael Clear are producing for Atomic Monster with Bisu and Atomic Monster’s Judson Scott executive producing.
Co-Director Pitt is no stranger to the world of beauty; the established artist and designer owns and runs fashion company Vixen, which has established numerous creative partnerships with major film studios for officially licensed horror brand clothing, like IT and Ghostbusters. Norman and Pitt are a married writing-directing team, and they previously co-wrote and directed “Grummy,” a dark fairy tale based on her own childhood assault survival story.
Wan’s Atomic Monster has delivered no shortage of genre hits that include the Annabelle franchise, Lights Out, The Nun, The Curse of La Llorona, Mortal Kombat, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and Malignant. Atomic Monster also has tech thriller M3GAN, Salem’s Lot, and The Nun 2 on the way.
