The Ghostbusters film franchise is back this week with fifth installment Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, a direct sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife – and by extension, the original two Ghostbusters movies – that brings the ghost-busting action back to New York City.
But where is the franchise headed next, you may be wondering?
In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter this week, Dan Aykroyd teases that the franchise could eventually make its way outside of the United States – if Frozen Empire is a hit, that is.
Aykroyd teases, “We like New York, but it’s not to say that we couldn’t make New York the base and travel off somewhere else.” He notes, “Hey, there are ghosts around the world.”
You can watch the interview snippet down below.
In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, now playing in theaters, the Spengler family returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level.
But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.
Meagan writes in her review for Bloody Disgusting, “Frozen Empire offers familiar set pieces, references, and easter eggs aplenty, but the nostalgia tank is now running on empty.”
