Coinciding with a new demo available during Steam Next Fest, Fool’s Theory and 11 bit studio’s gritty dark fantasy RPG The Thaumaturge now has a release date of December 5th on Steam, with console versions coming later in 2024. To sweeten things even more, Fool’s Theory has released a new gameplay trailer.
The Thaumaturge is an isometric, story-rich RPG set in 1905 Warsaw. You are Wiktor Szulski, who is drawn back to Warsaw by family matters. Wiktor also happens to have the gift of thaumaturgy. This turns out to be vital, as only a thaumaturge can tame the demonic entities known as Salutors, which feed on human flaws, but can also gift those who tame the Salutors with unique powers. It’s up to Wiktor to uncover these Salutors and free his people from their grip.
Drawing from a mix of Polish and Russian folklore, The Thaumaturge features unique turn-based combat, where you battle your foes using human attacks and skills, as well as psychic attacks delivered by Salutors. Think Atlus’ Persona games, but with a western flavour. The main focus of The Thaumaturge, however, is the story aspect. You’ll be influencing and manipulating the temperaments of other characters to get what you need, but will also be needing to make compromising choices along the way that will have you dealing with the aftermath.
As mentioned, the game has a demo available now, which takes place during the game’s prologue, allowing you to get an introduction to The Thaumaturge’s investigation and combat mechanics.
