Last year, we shared a first look at Tobin Bell and Jeremy Irons in Darren Lynn Bousman’s (Saw II-IV, Spiral) newest horror offering, Cello.
Now, we have an exclusive new shot from the upcoming horror film as well as details on Bousman’s crazy side project, Attic Acquisitions, which offers fans a chance to own some truly unique collectibles.
First, Cello, which stars Academy Academy Award, Tony, Emmy, and SAG Award winning actor Jeremy Irons and Saw‘s Tobin Bell, tells story of an aspiring cellist who learns the cost of his brand-new cello is a lot more insidious than he first thought. Syrian actor Samer Ismail and Saudi actress Elham Ali also star.
“This movie has been a beast,” Bousman tells us when we asked about the film’s progress. “We finally finished it a few weeks back and are currently in the middle of a deal for its release. So, hopefully, an announcement soon!
“Since the movie was shot primarily in Arabic, mixing it, doing the ADR, and then having to translate it has taken longer than we were expecting. Our hope is the movie will be released later this year.”
“It’s such a cool, unique, strangely beautiful film,” Bousman adds. “I mean, I was able to shoot this thing in Saudi Arabia, Ireland, Prague, and Italy. It was one of the most dynamic projects that I have been a part of.”
ATTIC ACQUISITIONS
WHAT IS ATTIC ACQUISITIONS?
“Another one of my crazy passion things. I’ve been lucky in my career to have the ability to explore things that interest me. Musicals. Magic. Immersive Theater, etc. One thing that has always excited me was old and arcane things. When my grandparents died as a kid, I remember going through their houses and taking things that reminded me of them. Books, old games, trinkets, and knickknacks.
“Here I am in my mid-40s and still have those objects displayed in my house because they conjure memories of family members long passed. My kids walk past these artifacts and know they are from their great-grandparents… kin they have never met.
“Ernest Hemingway said, ‘Every man has two deaths: when he is buried in the ground and the last time someone says his name.’
“When I see things from my grandparents, they are still here.
“I’ve been collecting strange shit for decades. My house is overflowing with unusual purchases. I thought it would be cool to put some of these acquisitions out there for people to acquire.”
WHAT DO YOU COLLECT?
“The obsession with this collection started back during Saw II. For the first time in my life, I was alone, in a different country, living by myself with a little coin in my pocket. I would venture into strange shops and just buy things I thought looked cool. 75% of the time there was no rhyme or reason to anything I would acquire – I looked at it like ART and wanted things to spark conversation when people saw them… ‘Bousman, what the fuck is this?’
“As I’ve gotten older, I began to curate a look, and aesthetic. I sought out old old, esoteric, occult, macabre-looking things. I still buy ridiculous stuff as well… things that I believe when people see them in my house will either cause them to roll their eyes or immediately demand an explanation.”
WHAT WOULD CAUSE SOMEONE TO ROLL THEIR EYES?
“I love vintage board games. They made some absurd ones. So I have a display case that has old-school BIBLE GAMES, SEX GAMES, and HORROR GAMES. So while people peruse my cabinet looking for a game to play they won’t find Monopoly BUT, they will find ‘SEDUCTION! A Swinging Game for Swingers’ sitting on top the ‘TEN COMMANDMENTS BOARD GAME’. I guess what I am saying is… I have range.”
AND NOW YOU’RE SELLING THIS?
“Some of it…
“I have two kids now, dogs, lizards, fish, and the biggest personality of all, a wife. There is a fine line between collecting and hoarding. As my family has gotten bigger there is less and less space. These treasures I’ve collected for decades have slowly ended up in boxes, stuffed under beds, or tossed in our attic.
“Literally, the entire impetus of this love of collecting was to remember… and over the years, I was forgetting all of these cool things I had bought, and collected.
“One day my wife Laura and I were talking and had the idea of curating and packaging some of these things. That led me down a rabbit hole of trying to piece together insane and crazy curations. So the idea here, I am not selling trinkets. I am putting together these boxes of strangeness.”
I IMAGINE THERE WILL BE SOME COOL HORROR STUFF MIXED IN?
“Hell yes! I mean, the majority of my stuff could be considered horror. The occult, witchcraft, the devil, etc… but, as it relates to fictional horror, I have a thing for old horror games, as I previously mentioned. I try to pick up anything that I see that would look cool on a bookshelf, or in a display case. I collect Garbage Pail Kids. However, before that, I was into these cards called You’ll Die Laughing. Topps released these things back in the late 50s. They are basically trading cards featuring classic monsters with a funny quote or commentary on them. They were memes before memes were a thing.”
ANY CHANCE WE WILL SEE SOME OF YOUR PROPS END UP ON THE SITE?
“Yeah. For those that don’t know, I have a ton of screen-used stuff from every film I’ve made. At this point, it’s just wasting away, collecting dust, and being eaten by insects in my storage unit. The last time I was there I pulled out a bunch of stuff that I will eventually put up there. I have a ton of Repo! The Genetic Opera stuff, as well as some really cool gems from Saw II, and III I think fans will dig.”
LASTLY, WHAT’S NEXT?
“This is Hollywood, so I never know until I am on set yelling action. That said, if I were to wager on the next thing it’s a nasty little ‘when animals attack’ type movie.”
