David Fincher’s ‘Gone Girl’ Finds Horror in the Dark Heart of Marriage [The Lady Killers Podcast]

“I’m the cunt you married. The only time you liked yourself was when you were trying to be someone this cunt might like. I’m not a quitter, I’m that cunt. I killed for you; who else can say that? You think you’d be happy with a nice Midwestern girl? No way, baby! I’m it.”

Marriage is not for the faint of heart. Designed to be a lifelong commitment, this legal union begins with an extravagant party at which friends and family dress to the nines to celebrate your love over dinner and dancing. But once the party’s over, it’s just you and your spouse. Hopefully you chose the right person. David Fincher’s Gone Girl follows a troubled young couple who married each other for all the wrong reasons. Based on the novel by Gillian Flynn, this psychological horror story centers an outwardly perfect couple secretly determined to tear each other apart.

On the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) returns home to find his front door open, his coffee table overturned, and his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) nowhere to be found. Despite his best efforts to appear concerned, Nick soon finds himself the prime suspect in her disappearance. The emergence of his young mistress and Amy’s own salacious diary paint an even more sinister portrait of this grinning husband. But a shocking twist reveals Amy’s true intentions. Enraged by her husband’s duplicitous life, this conniving Cool Girl has spent months orchestrating the perfect murder. She’s so much happier now that she’s “dead” and determined to see Nick die behind bars.

The Lady Killers conclude Back to School month with a lesson on feminine rage and complex revenge. Co-hosts Jenn Adams, Sammie Kuykendall, Rocco Thompson, and Mae Shults take Amy’s quizzes, follow her clues, and uncover the secrets of this quasi-feminist masterpiece. Why do they love her Cool Girl monologue? What does the film have to say about true crime? Do they feel any sympathy for Nick and who on earth choses the nickname Go? They’ll celebrate the film’s tenth anniversary with an in-depth discussion on murder, manipulation, and marriage while professing their love for one of the greatest female villains of all time.
