Days Gone wasn’t perfect, but it sure sold well. So well in fact that it makes Sony’ decision to not greenlight a sequel that much more frustrating. It’s certainly frustrating for the game’s director, Jeff Ross, who took to Twitter in response to the announcement that Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima had smashed the 8 million units sold milestone, claiming that Days Gone had done just as well, if not better.
Ross claims that after having been out for a little over a year and a half, Days Gone sold over 8 million copies on the PlayStation 4, and “a million+” when the game was ported to Steam and the Epic Games Store back in May of last year. Yet despite this, Sony considered the game a failure. When asked by a fan how that much in sales is considered a fail, Ross stated that Sony focused on review scores over sales. Topping it all off was Sony Bend’s rejection of a pitch for a sequel, and being assigned to help work on The Last of Us Part 2.
All isn’t lost for Sony Bend, however. The team is apparently at work on a new title since last July that features “deep open-world systems that they developed with Days Gone“. That being said, the fact that we won’t be getting more of Deacon St. John and his exploits in zombie-ravaged Oregon is a shame.
Days Gone was released initially for the PlayStation 4 in 2019.
At the time I left Sony, Days Gone had been out for a year and a half (and a month), and sold over 8 million copies. It's since gone on to sell more, and then a million+ on Steam. Local studio management always made us feel like it was a big disappointment. #daysgone #PlayStation https://t.co/KMZr2pGe9r
