There are some fascinating names behind A24‘s dark comedy, Death of a Unicorne, beyond stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega (Scream, X, “Wednesday”). Not only is it produced by Ari Aster (Beau is Afraid, Misommar), but horror master John Carpenter will compose music for the film.
In Death of a Unicorne, “A father (Rudd) and daughter (Ortega) accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where his billionaire boss (Richard Grant) seeks to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties.”
The dark comedy marks writer/director Alex Scharfman’s (Resurrection, Lyle) directorial debut.
Award-winning filmmaker and composer John Carpenter (Halloween), Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies will compose music for the film.
The dark comedy has fantasy elements baked into the plot, but with Aster and Carpenter involved, it feels like a safe bet that Death of a Unicorne might dip further into genre territory than first glance.
In addition to these big genre names lending their talents to Death of a Unicorne, the film also stars Téa Leoni (Jurassic Park III, Spanglish), Will Poulter (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), Anthony Carrigan (Bill & Ted Face the Music, “Barry”), Sunita Mani (“Servant,” “Glow”), Jessica Hynes (Shaun of the Dead, Paddington 2), Stephen Park (Asteroid City).
As if that’s not enough, Larry Fong (Kong: Skull Island, 300) is the Director of Photography, Amy Williams (Master of None) is the Production Designer, Avy Kaufman (Tár) is Casting Director and Andrea Flesch (Midsommar) is Costume Designer. Alex Scharfman, Drew Houpt and Lucas Joaquin of Secret Engine, Tyler Campellone, Lars Knudsen of Square Peg, Tim Headington and Theresa Steele Page of Ley Line Entertainment are producing. Ari Aster, Michael Williams, Jacob Epstein, David Darby, Nate Kamiya and Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega will serve as executive producers.
The film received a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement clearing its cast and wrapped production this summer. That it’s currently in post-production means that, while we don’t currently have a release date, we expect one sometime in near future.
Stay tuned.
