AMC’s “The Walking Dead” kicked off its final 8-episode run this past Sunday night with the episode “Lockdown,” directed by Greg Nicotero. A huge horror fan who has a long and hugely influential history with the horror genre, director/makeup effects master Greg Nicotero often works references to his favorite horror movies into the episodes of “The Walking Dead” that he directs, which have to date included nods to everything from Deadly Blessing to Lucio Fulci’s Zombie, along with several nods to the work of the late George A. Romero.
“Lockdown” was no exception this past Sunday, and it featured one of Nicotero’s coolest “Tribute Walkers” to date: a zombie made up to look like Robert Englund’s Freddy Krueger!
As Noah Levine noted in his review for Bloody Disgusting, “Horror fans will certainly notice a sewer-dwelling walker that bears quite a resemblance to iconic slasher Freddy Krueger.”
The scene, which indeed took place down in a dark sewer, only briefly put the spotlight on the Freddy Krueger Zombie, and it was a bit hard to make out all the details in the tribute. But you can check out an awesome behind the scenes photo underneath the video below, which shows just how much effort Nicotero and his team put into absolutely nailing this one.
Nicotero particularly drew inspiration from Freddy Krueger’s appearance in Wes Craven’s original A Nightmare on Elm Street, and it’s a nearly dead-on recreation of that makeup.
If the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise ever returns from the grave, we’re thinking that Greg Nicotero and his makeup team should probably be getting a call. Don’t you think?
