Steven Spielberg is reteaming with David Koepp (Jurassic Park) on an untitled “UFO film based on his own original idea,” and the mystery project may have found its star in Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place, Edge of Tomorrow) Deadline reports today.
Universal will be bringing an untitled “original event film” from Steven Spielberg to theaters on May 15, 2026, which has David Koepp as the writer based on a story by Spielberg.
The enigmatic film is “described as a two-hander, so Emily Blunt would be playing one of the two leads in the project.” Blunt, fresh off an Oscar win for her turn in Oppenheimer, is in early talks to star in Steven Spielberg’s next film at Universal and Amblin. This would mark the first time that Blunt would appear in a Spielberg film.
Plot details remain under tight lock and key, but Variety recently teased that Spielberg will “likely make his next project a UFO film based on his own original idea.” So, it feels safe to predict that this is the aforementioned UFO movie, but we’ve got no confirmation at this time.
Interesting to note, Koepp is also returning to his early roots with the next installment in the Jurassic World franchise. He’ll be writing next year’s untitled new installment.
Steven Spielberg is of course no stranger to extraterrestrial encounters, directing two of the greatest alien movies of all time: Close Encounters of the Third Kind in 1977 and E.T. in 1982. It’s an arena he returned to in 2005, directing an adaptation of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds.
Even more recently, Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment produced the Netflix docuseries “Encounters” last year, which explores true stories of human contact with otherworldly phenomena. You can stream all four episodes of “Encounters” over on Netflix right now.
Stay tuned for further details as they arrive on this “event movie.” One thing is for certain, though: all signs point to Spielberg returning to his summer blockbuster roots, which he essentially pioneered with films like Jaws and the Indiana Jones franchise.
