The found footage genre isn’t just relegated to film. Steelkrill Studio’s psychological horror title The Backrooms 1998 attests to that. Released back in May on Steam Early Access, the game is currently still in beta, but has plenty of potential in its scares.
Described as an “escape room” type of game, The Backrooms 1998 is a first-person psychological survival horror title that centres on a young teen who happens to fall into the depths of The Backrooms. What is The Backrooms? That’s for you to find out. However, you’ve also got to escape. You can roam freely while searching for clues, ways to mark just where you’ve been, medicine to help you to stay sane, and previous batteries to keep your light going.
All the while, you’ll come across footage telling the story of just what happened in 1998.
If that wasn’t enough, you’re not alone in The Backrooms 1998. Whatever it is, it can hear you. As a result, you’ll have to take of care where you step and what you bump into. Don’t scream or it will hear you. Run when you have to, but mind your stamina. You can also hide in crawl spaces, under tables or in lockers, but don’t make a sound.
Oh, did we mention that The Backrooms 1998 employs a limited save system? Don’t exceed your saves, or you’ll be a permanent resident.
