The first two movies in The Expendables franchise were released into theaters with “R” ratings, but oddly enough, The Expendables 3 came along in 2014 with a PG-13 rating.
Lionsgate isn’t making that mistake again, and this week’s official Red Band trailer for The Expendables 4 promises that the franchise’s return is DEFINITELY a rated “R” affair.
In fact, the entire marketing gimmick for the movie is that it’s rated “R” and bloody-as-hell, with the trailer humorously spotlighting tweets from fans who were begging for it.
The Expendables 4 has been rated “R” by the MPA for “Strong/bloody violence throughout, language, and sexual material,” all of which is on display in today’s official trailer.

Here’s the official plot synopsis: “A new generation of stars join the world’s top action stars for an adrenaline-fueled adventure in The Expendables 4 (aka Expend4bles). Reuniting as the team of elite mercenaries, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, and Sylvester Stallone are joined for the first time by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, and Andy Garcia. Armed with every weapon they can get their hands on and the skills to use them, The Expendables are the world’s last line of defense and the team that gets called when all other options are off the table. But new team members with new styles and tactics are going to give “new blood” a whole new meaning.”
The Expendables 4 arrives in theaters on September 22, 2023.
Scott Waugh directed the new movie from a screenplay by Kurt Wimmer, Tad Daggerhart, and Max Adams, based on a story by Spenser Cohen, Wimmer, and Daggerhart.
