If you’re up for some 2.5D RPG action in your horror games, you should keep an eye out for Moonless Formless’ upcoming Withering Rooms, which is set to release in Early Access on Steam on October 4.
A mix of RPG and adventure elements, Withering Rooms is set in a procedurally-generated Victorian mansion that changes each night. Details on the story are a bit vague, but you play as Nightingale, who has been sent by her father to Mostyn House, a strange and cursed place filled with walking corpses. You’ll be sneaking through Mostyn House, gathering weapons, magical artifacts, keys, crafting materials and the like. You’ll have to play it smart and attack your foes when the time is right. Otherwise, you’ll be running and hiding to bide your time.
Seeing as Withering Rooms is procedurally generated, there will always be plenty of secret passageways filled with all sorts of goodies to help you on your journey. The game isn’t just restricted to Mostyn House, as you’ll also be venturing through things like hedge mazes, tombs, caves, churches, and ruins beyond the Mostyn House grounds. You’ll also be having to make some tough decisions when it comes to keeping your items. Do you perform a ritual to preserve items from night to night, or do you decide to permanently level up instead?
Speaking of spells, Withering Rooms offers up a wide variety of them to help you during your mission. You can create hex traps on closet doors, enchant suits of armor to assist you, or create a decoy mimic of yourself. However, use too much magic and you’ll become cursed, causing the walls begin to drip with blood and the world around you becoming even more nightmarish.
Withering Rooms will also allow you a wide variety of playstyles, thanks to the items you can purchase throughout the game. Be it a stealthy assassin with a knife one night, or a sorcerer with a cadre of minions the next, there’s plenty of variety.
