After premiering at Fantasia last summer, zombie horror movie The Sadness has now been acquired by Shudder, with the film set to debut on the platform on May 12, 2022.
Deadline broke the news today.
Director Rob Jabbaz’s feature debut, The Sadness centers on “a young couple, played by Regina Lei (76 Horror Bookstore) and Berant Zhu (We Are Champions, How to Train Your Dragon), trying to reunite amid a city ravaged by a plague that turns its victims into deranged, bloodthirsty sadists.”
Tzu Chiang Wang (It’s Drizzling) and In Ru Chen also star in the film.
“It’s been such an enjoyably bizarre journey getting The Sadness made and distributed! I’m incredibly excited for everyone out there to finally see it!” Rob Jabbaz tells Deadline.
“From the moment we first saw The Sadness, we knew this was something special. The film reaches heights rarely attained in the horror space. Rob Jabbaz is definitely a talent to watch,” said Raven Banner’s Managing Partner, Michael Paszt. “Shudder is hands down the home for The Sadness and we look forward to continuing our partnership with them.”
Meagan wrote in her 4-star Fantasia review, “Jabbaz keeps a death grip on the pulse of the current climate, delivering a rage-filled manifesto that aims to tick off every cinematic taboo possible and tests your gag reflex in the process. It’s transgressive horror of the highest, most aggressive order.”
