Last year brought news that Fangoria Studios was teaming with legendary horror mangaka Junji Ito on a live-action adaptation of Bloodsucking Darkness along with two additional live-action feature films. A new report from Screen Daily reveals what those mysterious projects are.
It was previously teased that Bloodsucking Darkness was “set to be the first of three projects that Fangoria plans to adapt from Ito’s hit vampire series Smashed: Junji Ito Story Collection.”
Now, Pan-Asian studio Through the Lens Entertainment (TTLE) has teamed with Fangoria Studios to produce Bloodsucking Darkness , The Mystery Of The Haunted House Part 1 and The Mystery Of The Haunted House Part 2.
In the Junji Ito stories, “Bloodsucking Darkness follows a girl with an eating disorder who vomits blood and is stalked by vampire bats, while The Mystery Of The Haunted House revolves around two friends who must escape a ghostly home and its demented proprietor. The tales originate from the Smashed: Junji Ito Story Collection.”
What’s intriguing about this news is that The Mystery of the Haunted House features a recurring antagonist in Junji Ito’s works: Souichi Tsujii. Could this be the start of the Junji Ito live-action cinematic universe?
All three adaptations are set to go into development this summer, with production targeting 2025 and 2026.
Ito will serve as producer alongside Armen Aghaeian, Tara Ansley, and Abhi Goel of Fangoria Studios, Yasu Kutami and Tsubasa Yamaguchi of Amuse Group USA and Aditya Chand and Jay Van Hoy of TTLE. Indie producer Carlos Aguirre, who brokered the deal, will serve as executive producer.
While these adaptations are still years away from release, we have Adult Swim’s mini-series “Uzumaki,“ based on the supernatural horror manga, on the way very soon. Written and illustrated by Ito, the original manga series told the story of the citizens of Kurōzu-cho, a fictional city that is plagued by a supernatural curse involving spirals. Look for that to arrive in September.
