With Fall already here and October kicking off this week, peak Halloween season is officially upon us. Seasonal fall flavors are lining the store shelves, the leaves are starting to turn, and the summer sun is on its way out, vacating to make room for that crisp, cool weather.
In other words, it’s the perfect time to cozy up and watch more horror movies, and this week’s streaming picks are dedicated to Fall-centric horror movies that exude a pitch perfect autumn atmosphere. Some of them even embrace the Halloween holiday we all love so much.

Dark Night of the Scarecrow – AMC+, Fandango at Home, Midnight Pulp, Peacock, the Roku Channel, Shudder, Tubi
Don’t let the simplicity of this made-for-TV movie fool you; Dark Night of the Scarecrow is compelling storytelling. Set in a small Southern town over the Halloween season, a mentally challenged man is wrongfully murdered for a crime he didn’t commit. When his murderers evade justice, a mysterious scarecrow systematically takes them out. Halloween décor, scarecrows, farmland, and a fantastic performance by horror stalwart Larry Drake make for one perfect Halloween season movie. It’s a Southern type of Fall-set horror movie, with distinct Halloween flair.
Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers – AMC+, Shudder
After sitting out the previous entry, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, Michael Myers returns to Haddonfield once more on All Hallow’s Eve with murder on his mind. This time, the Boogeyman targets his telepathically linked niece, Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris). Not only does the fourth entry have a great final girl in Rachel (Ellie Cornell), but its Autumnal atmosphere grabs you from the opening credits and never lets go. What’s a Fall horror list without a Halloween entry, anyway?
The Mutilator – Arrow Player, Midnight Pulp, NightFlight+, SCREAMBOX, Tubi
At first glance, this slasher doesn’t exactly scream autumn. Yet it was initially titled Fall Break, with a matching theme song referring to the Fall setting. The weather is crisp and cool, making this beach excursion among college friends an odd choice. Bikinis and cozy sweaters collide in gory fashion. That’s just one of the many campy qualities that makes The Mutilator so endearingly silly. This slasher is a weird whodunit type, in that it’s only the victims that don’t know the identity of the killer. But it’s the gore that brings it in this atypical Fall horror slasher. The killer’s use of a fishing gaff is bloody and brilliant. And the showdown between lead protagonist Ed Jr. and the killer solidifies its splatter reputation, spilled guts and all.
Sleepy Hollow – MGM+, Prime Video
Fallen leaves, gnarled trees, and a constant roll of fog leave the small town of Sleepy Hollow steeped in the autumn air. That’s where police constable Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp) winds up on an assignment to investigate a series of beheadings. The culprit, of course, is the legendary Headless Horseman. Based on Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” Tim Burton’s Gothic tale is intertwined with Halloween and the Fall season. Look for new twists and updates to the iconic story, with a witchy take on the iconic headless foe.
The Witch – Cinemax, Kanopy, Max
Robert Eggers’ feature debut centers around a young woman coming of age under the harshest of conditions. After exile from their community, Thomasin’s family relocates to a rural area near dark woods to rebuild their lives. It so happens to be Fall, too, when the weather is growing too cool to plant a harvest that will last through Winter. Thomasin’s adolescence is marred with puritanical oppression and a witch in the woods wreaking havoc on the family. What would self-discovery look like in 1630s New England, when the freedom to do so doesn’t exist? Never have we cheered so hard for a teen to live deliciously and find her place in the world. It’s the perfect time of year to watch this witchy horror movie set during autumn.
