Behind Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Black Widow, A Quiet Place Part II, and Jungle Cruise, Jason Reitman‘s legacy sequel Ghostbusters: Afterlife has become the 12th movie to hit the $100 million mark at the domestic box office this year, with a current domestic total of $102,200,045 as of this past weekend.
Internationally, the sequel to the original classic has scared up $42,900,000, with the film’s worldwide total currently sitting at $145,100,045 in its second week of release in theaters.
How is Afterlife stacking up to the 2016 reboot thus far? Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters was of course released in theaters during pre-pandemic times, which naturally means it was in a much better position to have a strong performance. That said, Ghostbusters ’16 ended with $128 million domestically, $100 million internationally, and $229 million worldwide.
Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife is approaching that domestic number but is still a ways off from the 2016 movie’s worldwide total, which is just about $80 million higher at this time.
The good news for Ghostbusters: Afterlife is that the film’s budget was *considerably* lower than Feig’s movie, the latter film ballooning to a massive $140 million production budget and essentially ensuring that it wasn’t going to make back the production/marketing spend at the box office. Afterlife, on the other hand, was set up for success, costing around $70-80m.
Even still, Ghostbusters: Afterlife needs to make a good deal more in order to become profitable, which leaves us wondering if Sony will be ordering up another sequel any time soon. For what it’s worth, Reitman and Afterlife co-writer Gil Kenan just signed an overall deal with Sony Pictures, which could bode well for the future of the franchise Reitman has deep love for.
