Announced earlier this month, Rian Johnson‘s follow-up to the hit murder-mystery Knives Out is titled Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, a brand new Benoit Blanc mystery.
Glass Onion will be releasing this coming holiday season, and we’ve learned today that the film will first be making its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The 47th edition of the festival runs from September 8-18, 2022.
In Glass Onion, “Detective Benoit Blanc travels to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery involving a new cast of colorful suspects.”
Johnson tweets, “Something I love about Agatha Christie is how she never tread water creatively. I think there’s a misperception that her books use the same formula over and over, but fans know the opposite is true. It wasn’t just settings or murder methods, she was constantly stretching the genre conceptually. Under the umbrella of the whodunnit she wrote spy thrillers, proto-slasher horrors, serial killer hunts, gothic romances, psychological character studies, glam travelogues. When I made Knives Out, that’s what excited me about the prospect of making more mysteries with Daniel as Benoit Blanc – to emulate Christie and have every film be like a whole new book, with its own tone, ambition, reason for being… and (ta dah) title.”
Daniel Craig is back as Benoit Blanc for the upcoming sequel, with the confirmed ensemble cast thus far also including Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, Jessica Henwick, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Janelle Monáe, Madelyn Cline, and Kate Hudson.
Knives Out was a massive hit for Lionsgate back in 2019, pulling in over $300 million worldwide at the box office, so it was only natural that a sequel wouldn’t be too far behind.
Last we heard, Netflix is on board for TWO sequels to the first movie.
