What’s next from Legendary’s MonsterVerse? Variety reports this week that a Godzilla vs Kong sequel will film in Australia later this year, which has many fans talking and speculating.
Variety notes, “The currently untitled sequel will receive A$16 million ($11.8 million) via the Australian federal government’s A$540 million ($399 million) Location Incentive Program. A further A$6.3 million ($4.66 million) of subsidy will come from the state screen agency Screen Queensland and its Production Attraction Strategy.”
The report also adds, “The two authorities said on Monday local time that they expect the new production to generate more than A$119 million ($88 million) into the economy, employ more than 500 local cast and crew, and use more than 750 extras.”
So what exactly is this particular MonsterVerse project, you ask? Is it truly a direct sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, which made $468 million at the global box office last year?
Well, we were previously aware of a couple different MonsterVerse projects, including a live action series for Apple TV+ that will feature Godzilla and several other monsters. We had also learned back in April 2021 that Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard was in talks to direct another MonsterVerse movie, which was potentially (at the time) a Son of Kong movie.
The final moments of Godzilla vs. Kong suggested that we could soon be seeing the continuing adventures of Kong, who has found himself a new home in the Hollow Earth. This could very well be the “Godzilla vs Kong sequel” Variety has reported on this week. Then again, the soon-to-film sequel project could be a different movie entirely. We’ll keep you posted!
Godzilla vs. Kong was the fourth film in the MonsterVerse, which kicked off with Godzilla in 2014 and continued with Kong: Skull Island in 2017 and Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019.
