Get ready for more horror survival gaming with PQube and developer Electric Monkeys’ When The Light Dies, a gothic survival game with roguelite elements that’s set in a desolate, frozen wilderness. Taking a bit of inspiration from Poncle’s Vampire Survivors, according to PQube’ Harrison Lewis, the team drew heavily upon Dan Simmons‘ novel “The Terror”, a fictionalized account of the 1840s expedition to the Northway Passage.
When The Light Dies sees players step into a murky world of shadow and obscurity as a lone survivor fighting to keep the darkness and the horrors that lurk within at bay. You’ll be utilizing an arsenal of weapons to hold back waves of creatures closing in on you, but you’ll also have to contend with having to light firepits and refill your oil lantern to stave off the encroaching darkness. As the light levels drop so does your sanity, resulting in faster and more deadly adversaries.
In addition to managing light levels and fending off monsters, you’ll also have to manage your temperature and hunger gauges while you’re at it. You’ll also be scavenging the procedurally generated world for supplies, including food and books to “calm your feverish mind.”
Firepower isn’t your only method of defense. You’ll absorb the souls of the slain and unlock powerful new abilities. That includes eldritch knowledge that will allow you to unleash cosmic blasts, baleful flames, and unholy healing spells at the cost of sanity. And because this is a roguelike, you’ll be rerolling and stacking upgrades to develop your character as you choose.
When The Light Dies currently has no release date, but is expected to launch on PC via Steam.
