‘Grendel’ – Dave Bautista Is Beowulf in Live Action Monster Movie from Jim Henson Company

The classic tale of Beowulf and Grendel is coming back to the big screen in a new live action movie from The Jim Henson Company titled Grendel, Variety reports this afternoon.

Specifically, the movie will adapt the same-titled 1971 novel from John Gardner.

The upcoming live action movie from director Robert D. Krzykowski will star Jeff Bridges as Grendel, Dave Bautista as Beowulf, and Bryan Cranston as King Hrothgar.

The cast also includes Thomasin McKenzie as Queen Wealhtheow, Aidan Turner as Unferth and T Bone Burnett as the Shaper, “who will also provide original songs for the film.”

Variety notes in their report that the film is “the story of the legendary monster at the heart of the Beowulf epic poem,” who will “step forward to tell his side of the tale.”

Variety adds, “Jim Henson’s Creature Shop will handle practical creature work and design.”

Grendel represents everything I love about the movies. John Gardner’s mad masterpiece cleverly tackles what it is to be human through the wild-eyed lens of a monster,” Krzykowski said in a statement. “It’s an honor to work with such a remarkable group of storytellers, all of whom seek to bring something wonderful and unexpected to audiences now.”
